Energy-Efficient Homes: How Fedewa Homes Builds for Sustainability https://fedewahomes.com/energy-efficient-homes-how-fedewa-homes-builds-for-sustainability/ https://fedewahomes.com/energy-efficient-homes-how-fedewa-homes-builds-for-sustainability/#respond Thu, 31 Oct 2024 12:20:04 +0000 https://fedewahomes.com/?p=6899

Energy efficiency is no longer just a trend; it’s a crucial aspect of modern homebuilding. At Fedewa Homes, we believe that sustainability should be seamlessly integrated into every custom home we build. Whether you’re concerned about lowering your utility bills or reducing your carbon footprint, our energy-efficient homes in Lansing, MI, are designed to meet both needs. As a leading Lansing custom home builder, we prioritize eco-friendly solutions that enhance comfort and sustainability. Here’s how we achieve energy efficiency in our custom homes.

Advanced Insulation for Year-Round Comfort and Savings

One of the cornerstones of an energy-efficient home is effective insulation. At Fedewa Homes, we use advanced insulation materials that help maintain consistent indoor temperatures, no matter the season. Michigan’s climate can be harsh, with cold winters and warm summers, but our insulation systems are designed to reduce heat loss in winter and minimize heat gain in summer.

This results in lower heating and cooling costs, allowing homeowners to enjoy year-round comfort while saving money on energy bills. By maintaining a stable indoor temperature, you also reduce the workload on your HVAC systems, which can prolong their lifespan and reduce maintenance costs.

Energy Star-Rated Appliances for Maximum Efficiency

In custom homes built by Fedewa Homes you have the option to have Energy Star-rated appliances, which are specifically designed to reduce energy consumption. From refrigerators and dishwashers to water heaters and washing machines, these appliances work efficiently without sacrificing performance.

Energy Star appliances are not only environmentally friendly but also cost-effective, helping homeowners save significantly on their utility bills. By choosing these high-efficiency appliances, you’re making an investment that will continue to pay off over time.

High-Performance Windows for Better Insulation and Natural Light

Windows play a crucial role in a home’s energy efficiency. That’s why we install high-performance windows in all of our custom homes. These windows are engineered to minimize heat transfer, keeping your home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. In addition to improving thermal efficiency, they also reduce energy costs by lessening the need for heating and air conditioning.

Our high-performance windows are also designed to maximize natural light. By allowing more sunlight to enter your home, you can reduce the need for artificial lighting during the day, further lowering your energy usage. Plus, the increase in natural light enhances the overall ambiance of your living spaces.

Smart Home Technology for Energy Management

In addition to energy-efficient construction, many of our custom homes come equipped with smart technology systems that allow homeowners to take control of their energy usage. From programmable thermostats to automated lighting systems, these features make it easy to monitor and reduce your energy consumption.

Imagine being able to adjust the thermostat, turn off lights, or monitor energy usage remotely from your smartphone. With smart home technology, you can make small adjustments that add up to significant energy savings over time. This technology not only improves convenience but also allows you to optimize your home’s energy efficiency with minimal effort.

Why Choose Fedewa Homes for Your Energy-Efficient Custom Home?

At Fedewa Homes, we understand that building a custom home is more than just creating a beautiful living space—it’s about crafting a home that is efficient, comfortable, and sustainable for the long term. As a trusted Lansing custom home builder, we are committed to integrating the latest energy-saving technologies and materials into every project, ensuring that your home meets both your lifestyle needs and your desire for sustainability.

Energy Efficiency in New Home Construction: Understanding the HERS Rating https://fedewahomes.com/new-homes/ https://fedewahomes.com/new-homes/#respond Fri, 14 Jul 2023 15:06:10 +0000 https://fedewahomes.com/?p=6376 Introduction: In an era where environmental consciousness and energy conservation are gaining momentum, building a new home with a focus on energy efficiency has become increasingly popular. One of the key measures used to evaluate a home’s energy performance is the Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Index. In this article, we will explore the significance of energy efficiencies in new home construction and delve into the HERS rating system, shedding light on how it can guide homeowners in making informed choices.

Understanding Energy Efficiency in New Home Construction: Building a new home with energy efficiency in mind offers a multitude of benefits. By incorporating advanced technologies, sustainable practices, and innovative design principles, homeowners can significantly reduce their carbon footprint while enjoying cost savings and enhanced comfort.

  1. Reduced Energy Consumption: Energy-efficient homes are designed to minimize energy consumption by employing various strategies. From advanced insulation and air sealing to efficient heating, ventilation, and cooling systems, these homes use less energy for heating, cooling, and overall operation.
  2. Lower Utility Bills: The reduced energy consumption of an energy-efficient home translates into lower utility bills. By optimizing energy usage and employing efficient appliances, lighting systems, and water fixtures, homeowners can experience substantial savings over the lifetime of their home.
  3. Enhanced Indoor Comfort: Energy-efficient homes prioritize indoor comfort by effectively managing temperature, humidity, and air quality. Proper insulation, high-performance windows, and energy-efficient HVAC systems ensure even temperatures throughout the home, reduced drafts, and improved air circulation, resulting in a more comfortable living environment.
  4. Sustainable Building Materials: New home construction allows for the use of sustainable building materials, such as recycled content, responsibly sourced wood, and low-emission products. These materials not only reduce the environmental impact of construction but also contribute to healthier indoor air quality.

Introducing the HERS Rating: The HERS rating is a standardized method for assessing a home’s energy efficiency. It provides homeowners, builders, and buyers with valuable insights into a home’s expected energy performance and allows for comparisons among different properties.

  1. How the HERS Rating Works: The HERS rating system evaluates a home’s energy efficiency based on its design and construction features. A certified energy rater conducts an on-site inspection, collecting data on various components such as insulation, windows, HVAC systems, and appliances. This information is then used to calculate the home’s HERS Index score.
  2. Interpreting the HERS Index: The HERS Index is a numerical score that represents a home’s energy efficiency compared to a reference home. The lower the HERS Index, the more energy-efficient the home. For example, a HERS Index of 50 means the home is 50% more energy-efficient than the reference home, while a HERS Index of 100 indicates the home performs at the same level as the reference home.
  3. Benefits of a Lower HERS Index: A lower HERS Index score signifies a higher level of energy efficiency. Homes with lower scores not only consume less energy but also offer increased savings on utility bills and a reduced environmental impact. Furthermore, a low HERS rating can enhance the resale value of the home, as energy-conscious buyers seek properties with lower operating costs.

Conclusion: Building a new home with a focus on energy efficiency brings numerous advantages. From reduced energy consumption and lower utility bills to enhanced indoor comfort and a reduced environmental footprint, energy-efficient homes offer a compelling proposition. The HERS rating system serves as a valuable tool for homeowners and builders, providing a standardized method to assess and compare the energy performance of homes. By leveraging the HERS rating, homeowners can make informed decisions, ensuring that their new home is not only a comfortable and sustainable living space but also an investment in a greener future.

While both choices have their merits, constructing a custom home offers unique advantages that can make your living experience truly exceptional. We will explore the top 10 reasons why building a new home is the preferred choice for discerning homeowners.

  1. Unmatched Customization: Building a new home allows you to personalize every aspect of your living space, from the layout and floor plan to the materials used and design elements. You have the freedom to bring your vision to life, creating a home that perfectly aligns with your lifestyle and aesthetic preferences.
  2. Modern Amenities and Technology: Newly built homes are equipped with the latest technologies, energy-efficient systems, and modern amenities. From smart home features to sustainable construction practices, you can enjoy the convenience, comfort, and cost savings associated with cutting-edge innovations.
  3. Energy Efficiency and Cost Savings: New homes are designed to meet and exceed today’s rigorous energy efficiency standards. From advanced insulation and efficient HVAC systems to energy-saving appliances, you can significantly reduce your carbon footprint and save on utility bills.
  4. Reduced Maintenance and Repairs: With a new home, you won’t have to worry about unexpected repairs or hidden issues that often come with older properties. New construction means that everything is fresh, under warranty, and built with the latest materials and techniques, providing peace of mind for years to come.
  5. Warranty and Builder Support: When you build a new home, you typically receive a comprehensive warranty that covers various aspects of the construction. This warranty, coupled with the builder’s ongoing support, ensures that any potential issues are promptly addressed, leaving you stress-free.
  6. Future-Proof Design: Custom home builders understand the importance of designing spaces that adapt to your evolving needs. Whether you plan to expand your family or accommodate changing lifestyle requirements, a new home can be designed with flexibility in mind, making it easier to adjust to future changes.
  7. Enhanced Safety and Security: Newly constructed homes often incorporate the latest safety features, such as fire-resistant materials, smoke detectors, and improved structural integrity. This prioritization of safety ensures that you and your loved ones are protected from potential hazards.
  8. Location and Landscaping: By building a new home, you can choose the ideal location that suits your lifestyle. Additionally, you have the opportunity to design and create a stunning landscape that perfectly complements your home, enhancing its beauty and outdoor living spaces.
  9. Building Codes and Regulations: Constructing a new home ensures compliance with current building codes and regulations, providing an added layer of safety and ensuring that your home meets the highest quality standards.
  10. Pride of Ownership and Emotional Investment: Building your dream home is an exciting and rewarding experience. From selecting the perfect lot to witnessing each construction milestone, the emotional investment and pride of ownership that come with building a new home are unparalleled. You’ll create lasting memories in a space that truly reflects your personality and values.

Conclusion: Building a new home in Haslett, Okemos, Williamston, or East Lansing offers numerous advantages over purchasing an existing property. From customization and energy efficiency to reduced maintenance and peace of mind, the benefits of a new construction are hard to match. When you choose to build, you embark on a journey to create a home that is uniquely yours, tailored to your needs, and crafted to provide comfort, functionality, and enduring value for years to come.

Parade of Homes 2013 https://fedewahomes.com/parade-of-homes-2013/ Mon, 29 Mar 2021 08:43:53 +0000 https://fedewahomes.com/?p=4951

The framing process is complete on our 2013 Parade Home! In this step of the building process we focus on our energy efficiency. Our exterior walls are built with 2×6 studs. This creates thicker walls allowing for more insulation. We also put in our heating and ventilation. Many of the production builders have gone to plastic ventilation systems without air returns on the second floor. We continue to use the best products in each of our new homes; this includes a quality ventilation system. Our system ensures that once you move into your new home it will be comfortable through the hottest summer and coldest winter. In this step, we also focus on sealing the envelope. If you have been shopping for a new home you have probably heard this term many times. Sealing the envelope simply refers to sealing every crack or nail hole created during the framing process. Keep in mind that this is only one step in building a green home. Building a truly green home takes planning and effort from pouring the foundation to the finishes. Our green process translates to huge savings each month, compared to your existing home. Soon we will finish the rough electrical, plumbing, and begin drywall in the new home. We are excited to keep you updated throughout construction of our 2013 Parade Home. In the next post we will show you some of the modern design products we are putting in this exciting new home!
